Georg Duftschmid received his MSc degree in computer science from the Vienna University of Technology in 1994. In 1995, he joined the Center for Medical Statistics, Informatics and Intelligent Systems of the Medical University of Vienna. Doing research in the field of automated verification of computerized clinical practice guidelines, he obtained his PhD degree from the Vienna University of Technology in 1999. In 2004, he received the Venia docendi for Medical Informatics from the Medical University of Vienna and became Associate Professor of Medical Informatics in the same year. In 2016 Georg Duftschmid was granted the honorary title "University professor" by the Federal President of Austria.
Georg Duftschmid teaches in the medical informatics curricula at the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna as well as in the medical curriculum at the Medical University of Vienna.
He is Associate Editor at BMC Medical Informatics & Decision Making and a representative of the Medical University of Vienna within the European University Hospital Alliance. Since 2011 Georg Duftschmid is head of the Section for Medical Information Management.
