The former Department of Medical Computer Sciences (IMC) was founded 1973 and had been preceded by a computing center (est. 1966) of the former II. Department of Medicine at the Medical School of the University of Vienna. The first head of this department had been Prof. G. Grabner, followed by Prof. M. Schemper in 1992, and by Doz. H. Grabner (2000 - 2003). From 2003 until 2004 Prof. M. Schemper was head again.
The former Department of Medical Statistics (and Documentation) - IMS – was founded in 1969 and headed by Professors F.X. Wohlzogen (1969 -1986), V. Scheiber (1986 - 1993) and P. Bauer (1994 - 2004).
The former Department of Medical Cybernetics was founded in 1977 at the Medical School of the University of Vienna, renamed as Department of Medical Cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence in 1984, and in Section for Artificial Intelligence in 2010. The first head of department had been Prof. R. Trappl, followed by Prof. W. Horn in 2007.
In 2004, the Departments of Medical Computer Sciences and of Medical Statistics merged under the designation Core Unit for Medical Statistics and Informatics (MSI) of the Medical University of Vienna and Prof. M. Schemper became head of this Core Unit. From 2007 to 2009 Prof. P. Bauer headed the MSI.
Since 2010 the sections of the MSI, the Section for Artificial Intelligence, as well as the newly founded Section for Science of Complex Systems are part of the Center for Medical Statistics, Informatics, and Intelligent Systems (CeMSIIS). Initially Prof. P. Bauer served as head, followed by Prof. W. Dorda in October 2010. Since December 2014 CeMSIIS was under the direction of Prof. M. Schemper, since December 2015 it is directed by Prof. M. Posch.
